Cultural Design Lecture - Extract

A talk held in David Trubridge's home town of Havelock North, Hawkes Bay. David speaks about the roles of the designer and his philosophy of the design process through art and craft. He is talking here about the amazing empathic connection between contemporary Aboriginal women painters and the land, as a source of inspiration.

"I believe that the focused and narrow, left-brain thinking typical of the industrial revolution and Modernism, is responsible for our current environmental and social crisis. Therefore it, and hence science, cannot alone be relied on to get us out of the mess."

"Cultural Design is a balanced kind of design that nourishes us culturally and spiritually, while employing far less 'stuff' yet still fulfilling our essential material needs. Thus we learn to effectively use the full potential of our brains, not just half, and so rediscover our place as part of the nature that gives us life, not as exploiter of it."
