Milan Design Fair 2012

We will have a strong presence as usual at this years Milan Design fair, however we will not be presenting this show ourselves. It is the first year one of our distributors has been able to present the show for us and we are excited this can happen. This year the Milan show is called 'Living with Trubridge' and is presented by our Italian Distributor B.Morone.

Dream Space - Milan 2011

DREAM SPACE DOME

An internal ‘break-out’ space for quiet contemplation, an external gazebo as a garden sanctuary, or a light-weight frame for an attractive shelter, Dream Space has a range of functions. But here in Milan we can enjoy this structure simply for its beautiful flow of lines and patterns, and for the way in which it focuses energy into its still calm centre. This is the first time that we have applied to architecture our process of building complex structures with minimal material use. The wood is only 5mm thick, and the entire set would fit inside a suitcase, yet it produces a remarkably strong and stable structure, once the pieces are curved and under tension. To reduce our environmental impact this dome was assembled entirely on site.

Milan 2010 - Freedom in Balance

For Milan 2010 David Trubridge has created a new installation based on the story of Icarus, which was shown at the ‘Temporary Museum for New Design’, in Superstudio Piú, Zona Tortona. Last year we told the Maori story of ‘The Three Baskets of Knowledge’.  This year we follow that up by illustrating the dual nature of this knowledge. Who hasn't stood on a cliff-top and longed to leap off, soaring effortlessly? Flight has forever been mankind's ultimate dream. That dream is both a physical escape from the bondage of gravity, and a metaphorical liberation from the body's earthly desires. We can now fly, whether it is in a jet, a hang-glider or a squirrel suit. But has this technical achievement granted us enrichment or just adrenalin rush? We suggest that such technical advances are insufficient on their own without greater wisdom. Like Icarus, we could be carried away and fly too close to the sun, lose our wings and perish.New Zealand used to be inhabited solely by birds – there were no mammals. In Maori mythology birds are the ‘Kaitiaki’ the original guardians. All-seeing, they glide freely over the land keeping watch. They are the intermediaries with the sky, the heavens and the gods. We are now the guardians of our planet which is threatened by the heat of the sun. We must not lose our aspirations but use our knowledge wisely for the benefit of all. The ability to fly is not enough – it is what we do with it that matters. Borne by our wings, we can spread our knowledge for all, rather than flying off alone too high.

Milan 2008 - Spiral Islands

Spiral Islands is a completely new installation created specially for Milan 2008 where it was shown in Zona Tortona. Delicate cloud lighting forms float over, and mirror, island seat forms below -- like the puffy white clouds that sit over the countless islands scattered over the Pacific Ocean. Aotearoa, the Maori name for New Zealand, means the land of the long white cloud. Both light and seat forms are made from a skin of two interlocking spirals, which were originally developed on a smaller scale in a set of wooden bowls. We have repeated the pattern and structure on different scales in exactly the same way in which nature does, as it forms the basis of life.

Milan 2007 - Lights

David Trubridge exhibited the whole of his much acclaimed light range in Milan this year during the Salone del Mobile, along with 'Float' which is a new bed concept for a Design Mobel, a New Zealand manufacturer. He was particularly looking for new retailers in Europe to sell the kitset lights. The exhibition was part of the Zona Tortona event -- at Spazio Goradesky, Via Forcella 7 (just off Via Tortona), Milano. There were several brand new designs like Twist, Flax and Squirt. Flax is now in production, and new lights Swirl and Swish came about through the experimental peices Twist and Squirt.
