<p>This acquisition is a rare honour for a contemporary designer, and it is the first time the internationally renowned museum has acquired items created by a modern designer that focus on ‘sustainable development.’ Trubridge is viewed in France as being one of world’s leading ‘eco-conscious designers’. The pieces acquired by the Pompidou Centre will be part of its extraordinary collection of Modern design classics, and important prototypes.</p>
<p>The current plan is to show the work early next year in the Centre's next show. The Pompidou Centre is one of the three most prestigious institutions of its kind in the western world, the other two being the Victoria and Albert museum in London (where Trubridge already has a jewellery box) and MOMA in New York.</p>
<p>The three pieces are the parts of an installation called Icarus which was first shown at the Milan Salone del Mobile in April 2010 at Superstudio Piu. The installation is based on the Greek legend of Icarus, and is made up of two luminous polycarbonate Wing lights circling around Sola, a patterned wooden sphere, coloured orange inside, to represent the Sun. It incorporates a vital moral for our times, reminding us not to get carried away with our technology and hubris because if we do the Sun might get too hot. Trubridge's fascination with timeless stories reflects his belief that design can do more than 'prettify' or provide technical solutions – it can also play a social or cultural role. He likes to repeat a quote he heard: “if we had more stories we would have less guns.”</p>
<p> </p>
<h3>ICARUS</h3>
<p>Icarus follows a pattern that Trubridge has established at Milan of showing captivating sculptural installations conceived around a story, which are made up from lighting units that can go on to be marketed as individual products. The extra dimension of the story has captivated the press and public, over and above the creative forms of the lights. To reduce environmental impact, all these large Milan installations were transported as airline luggage and assembled on site, and that too becomes part of the story.Trubridge has been well known for constructing complex forms using sheet materials and computer modelling to unroll strips like an unpeeled apple. This technique has allowed Trubridge to keep his production in New Zealand by transporting flat-pack (professionally built in market) and kitset (assembled by the purchaser) lights in boxes which are 1/40th and less of their final size. This reduces the environmental impact and dollar cost of transporting his work, both of which are vital for exporters, particularly in New Zealand. Additionally the consumer gets the enjoyment and fulfilment of making the light themselves. From Trubridge's promotional material for the kitset lights: “Seed System designs are only made possible through your involvement as you grow your kitset into a lightshade. Together we have helped to minimise the effect of shipping to reduce the number of trucks on the road, and decrease the design's environmental footprint.”</p>

<p>This success is shared by David Trubridge with moa – Meubles et Objets de Aotearoa – who have carefully managed Trubridge’s distribution and press relations over the past seven years in France. The Franco-New Zealand design firm is founded by Laurence Varga and Roderick Fry who have been determined since the beginning of their relationship with the designer that his presence should be long-lasting and extremely well-considered.</p>

<p>It seems certain now that Trubridge’s work has passed from a phase of ‘interesting newcomer' on the European scene to ‘influential classic’. He was even credited last year by architect Denis Montel, designer of Paris’s most exciting new interior design space of the last few years at Hermès, as being of great importance. “The Hermes shop project in the Lutetia pool displays openly a sensitivity and a movement which pays homage to traditional forms and craft techniques, drawing from it a fruitful inspiration, especially in its observation and respect for nature. “This expression is shared by many artists in different disciplines, including architecture, design and art, who draw on these sources and affirm these values, including the designer David Trubridge, dominant player in this movement. "</p>

<p><img class="leftAlone" src="http://www.davidtrubridge.com/assets/_resampled/resizedimage386600-OPENDAY.jpg" width="386" height="600" alt="" title=""/></p> Mon, 17 Oct 2011 20:41:47 +0000 http://www.davidtrubridge.com/news/open-day-for-new-premises/ http://www.davidtrubridge.com/news/move-to-new-premises/ <p>David Trubridge Design has at last moved into its own brand new premises.  The building was designed by David to incorporate our workshop, design studio and, most exciting of all, a showroom.  We have never had this public space up until now, nor has there been a place where all our lights could be seen in one place, particularly the big showpiece ones.  In fact, there can be very few similar venues in the world where you can meet the designer and his team in their studio, see a display of the actual designs themselves, and watch the fabrication happening out the back through a glass window. </p>
<p>The lights are sold in most of the great cities of the world, and have been featured in all the main international design magazines, and here they are in a sophisticated gallery in Whakatu, a tiny village in Hawkes Bay.  A prominent feature of the new space is a solid wood staircase, also designed by David, that has caused a few ripples locally.  Some of David's woodblock prints and photographs are displayed on the walls for sale.  New products such as jewellery, small boxes, carpets made by Cronz, and fabric designs developed in partnership with Hemptech are all in the pipeline and will be added in the next few months.  We have longer term plans to develop the place as a centre of innovative thought based around design workshops and community events.</p>

Here we are expressing our spreading awareness of, and connection to, Nature. This 2 metre convex light is built with an organic, irregular pattern which reflects Nature's growth. It was designed by David Trubridge and signals an exciting new direction in his design development. The material has been specially developed in conjunction with <a href="http://www.scionresearch.com" target="_blank">Scion Laboratory</a> and the Bio Polymer Network in New Zealand using plant based plastic and local flax fibre. It is assembled using only a heat gun to fuse the pieces together.</p>

<h2>DREAM SPACE DOME</h2>
<p>An internal ‘break-out’ space for quiet contemplation, an external gazebo as a garden sanctuary, or a light-weight frame for an attractive shelter, <a href="http://www.davidtrubridge.com/Designs/large-projects/sculpture-2/dream-space/">Dream Space</a> has a range of functions. But here in Milan we can enjoy this structure simply for its beautiful flow of lines and patterns, and for the way in which it focuses energy into its still calm centre. This is the first time that we have applied to architecture our process of building complex structures with minimal material use. The wood is only 5mm thick, and the entire set would fit inside a suitcase, yet it produces a remarkably strong and stable structure, once the pieces are curved and under tension. To reduce our environmental impact this dome was assembled entirely on site.</p>
<p><em><strong>David talks about how the Dream Space design came about:</strong></em></p>
<p><br/><em>"A visitor to our stand in Milan understood the real genesis of the design very clearly when he said that the structure had a logical inevitability to it.  Following the line of the curves, he said that there could be no other way in which this dome could have been built with such structural integrity.  This is the way in which I work, and have done for some time, on the minimal skin structures of the forms that we build.  First I generate the overall form of the dome as a single surface.  Then I draw the lines of the structure onto this surface.  They follow their own inevitable path, directed by the curve of the surface, and lines of force within the structure.  It is no accident that the pattern of these lines recall other design versions of such buildings, because we are all governed by the same laws of physics. Some people have drawn a link to Islamic art -- while I have an enormous respect for one of our greatest art traditions, this is not actually the source for the design."</em></p>

<p>The wood is thermally modified, plantation-grown pine which has been heated to make it durable outdoors without the use of poisonous chemicals. It has an oiled finish. The junctions are aluminium plates fastened with rivets. The dome is built in six sections which can be taken apart for easy transport. A timber floor, made from the same material, can also be supplied, and a fabric cover is under development. <em>Dome size: 4.4m w x 2.5m h</em></p>
<h2>SEED SYSTEM + GROW FAMILY</h2>
<p>We are continually doing all we can to reduce our environmental footprint. We commissioned a Life Cycle Analysis of our products which revealed that freight was a ‘hotspot’. Our kitset Coral light was setting a good example with minimal volume for maximum effect. Therefore, we re-designed four of our larger lights so they could be freighted as kitset and easily assembled at home or destination. This is the <a href="http://www.davidtrubridge.com/Designs/seed-system/">Seed System</a>.</p>
<p>The Seed System is not limited to standard light sizes, but is even more effective for our large lights. To demonstrate this we are presenting a 2.4m high Giant Koura with a three colour interior, specially created for the Milan show. This Koura has been up-scaled using new parametric software, that adds in extra components as the form becomes larger.</p>
<h2>MINI CORAL 400mm dia</h2>
<p>The Coral light has become a contemporary classic, voted an icon by several international magazines. But the limitation of the material meant that we could not make them smaller that 60cm in diameter, which is too large for many living spaces. Now, at last, we have found a suitable material and are able to launch the Mini-Coral kitset lightshade . . . and they come in colours too!</p>

This Triennial is America’s most highly regarded design show exhibiting the world’s most forward-thinking designers and is a critically acclaimed and publicly lauded survey of the best in contemporary design.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">The exhibition, which includes one of Trubridge’s three Spiral Island seat/light pairs, asks the question "Why Design Now?" It examines why design thinking is an essential tool for solving some of today's most urgent problems; what draws creative thinkers, makers, problem solvers to this crucial field of discovery; and why business leaders, policy makers, consumers and citizens should embrace design values. </p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify;">“Why Design Now?” will be on view from May 14, 2010,through Jan. 9, 2011, and will explore the work of designers addressing human and environmental problems across many fields of design from architecture and product design to fashion, graphics, new media and landscape design. Organized by Cooper-Hewitt curators Ellen Lupton, Cara McCarty, Matilda McQuaid and Cynthia Smith, the Triennial will be global in reach for the first time, reflecting the connectedness of design practices and the need for international cooperation to solve the world’s problems.</p>

Ebb seeks to explore the play of light and shadow, and responds to our popular <a href="http://www.davidtrubridge.com/flow-family/" target="_blank">Flow</a> range. The lines ebb and flow creating motion around the form. Ebb is designed for interiors where our usual blonde wood is not suitable. It was received well, both at Mondo Luce and at Simon James.
