| This is the piece
that David made at the Furniture Society Conference 2000 in Toronto. He started making it
at Sheridan College with the assistance of Peter Tang. They moved in to Toronto for the
last two days of the conference where they finished assembling it as a demonstration for
the Furniture Society members. The demonstration was very generously assisted by 3M. David
developed his building process around 3M's excellent 'Jetweld' glue system. 'Jetweld' is
an innovative, fast-setting hot glue, with the strength of an epoxy. It would have been
impossible to build a structure of so many joints with conventional glues and long clamp
times.
The form was developed using a 3D
computer drawing programme. Like the Body Raft, this design draws on David's Naval
Architecture training and his boatbuilding experience. The pieces of oak were steam bent
around a mould, which was gradually removed during construction. The wood is left
naturally unfinished and the seat can be used indoors or in the garden.
Raft was a finalist in the Japan
Design Foundation International Design Competition in Osaka 2001. |
